A Withering State

By A D Mod The Statesman Feb 21, 2003
Recently a former Prime Minister, Mr V P Singh, observed that “the Indian state is not totally withered”. The near total withering is clear, even to one such as he, a leading player in the political games over the last 50 years. This is a unique political disease of paralysis and parasitism, not to be found in a medical encyclopaedia. Sri Aurobindo’s insight saw through this double malaise long ago when he described Indian political leaders as “petty adventures” and “prisoners of a dwarf humanity”. Recent public research reveals the near total disillusionment of the people in those elected to power over decades. The author is formerly of the Indian Civil Service.
