Extracts from the book " Bal Gangadhar Tilak - His writings & speeches - Appreciation " by Aurobindo Ghose
His scholastic labour has been done almost by way of recreation.
To bring in the mass of the people, to found the greatness of the future on the greatness of the past, to infuse Indian politics with Indian religious fervour and spirituality, are the indispensable conditions for a great and powerful political awakening in India.
Others, writers, thinkers, spiritual leaders, had seen this truth. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the first to bring it into the actual field of practical politics.
Born Aurobindo Ghose, guruji developed Integral Yoga after his revolutionary days to strive for India's independence. His father believed British culture to be superior and hence sent him to a English boarding school & eventually to England. #quoteoftheday https://t.co/x8m1iLO188

This obsession with the realization of the Transcendental aspect of Brahman, in both Samkhya and Shankarite adwait is the thing that made me appreciate Ramanuj's Vishishtadwait as well as Sri Aurobindo's Integral Adwait (Ref: Essays on the Gita by Sri Aurobindo).
The Idea of World-Union As an Alternative to a World-State https://t.co/zV1SOxufwp
I think Aurobindo carried it too far. With so many incarnations and in today's mixed world, being patriotic to one nation is not always right for many.
Liberalism in #India – a reading list https://t.co/NiS8NRKAHx #liberty
People act in accordance with their subjective values, needs, means & aspirations. The motivations leading a human to act are unique to him...and are a complex mix of economic, cultural, personal & circumstantial antecedents. It is not humanly possible to deconstruct this mix. https://t.co/xL30GIDGQ8
This is applicable to every single human act, regardless of whether (s)he lives in a monocultural or multicultural society, in a free or authoritarian regime, in the past, present or future. This is a universal truth. The phenomenon of voting on religious, ethnic or any other denominational lines is a function of the regime being sectarian in nature...not an intrinsic property of a multicultural society.

After 20 years of failure to make any dent on Indians’ psyche with the message of liberty and good governance – so deeply immersed their mind is in their narrow identities of caste, religion or region – I’ve come to the (reluctant) view that we need to strengthen the nationalist focus of our liberal message. Liberalism and nationalism are often at logger heads. Potentially, these two ideas are irreconcilable. But the practical reality is that Indians, in particular, are perhaps the most collectivist group of people in the world. They do not easily seem themselves as individuals first and foremost. Their identifies are completely subsumed by some ethnic, regional or religious category. So, I’ve come to the view that we should mix the least dangerous of collectivisms with the message of liberty. The least dangerous is perhaps nationalism, although that can deteriorate into fascism if it is allowed to further mix with religion. https://www.sabhlokcity.com/2018/04/nationalist-messaging-of-the-liberal-message/
Part 7 of #DemocracyInIndia
my piece: Democracy versus Development -- for practical purposes Indians are being ruled by 'foreigners' or rulers who are far removed from masses.

An interesting tribute to late Ashok Mitra... rather than continue adhering to polemicism, hollow slogans, fake categories & false political imagery, let the communist parties introspect on why they don't produce the likes of Mitra anymore...
More than the movies directed by #SatyajitRay I love his fiction - Feluda, Professor Shanku. The best manifestation of his creative genius. Its a privilege to be able to read him in his mother-tongue, which I share through a happy accident of birth - Bangla.
